If you are a guitar player, there are eight guitar chords that you must know. In this lesson, Nate Savage teaches these essential chords and provides tips for making them sound great and clean, as well as helping with chord transitions. According to the late great Chet Atkins, “I never made a dime above five.” Atkins was referring to the fifth fret, specifically open chords. As a virtuoso, Atkins emphasized the importance of open chords in guitar playing.

The eight chords that Savage covers in this lesson are G major, C major, D major, F major, E major, A major, E minor, and A minor. If you are concerned about remembering all of them, don’t worry. You can space them out over several weeks or months and take them at your own pace.

Savage starts with the G major chord, advising that you pretend to hold an apple when holding the guitar and to place your thumb on the back of the neck while relaxing your hand. You can use either the first, second, and third fingers or the second, third, and fourth fingers, although Savage strongly encourages using the latter. To make the G major chord, place your third finger on the third fret of the low E string and make sure to come down on the very tip of your finger and right behind the fret wire. Next, place your second finger on the second fret of the A string and your pinky on the third fret of the high E string, then strum all six strings.

The next chord is the C major chord, for which Savage suggests not kinking your wrist too far when making chords as it can hurt after a while. To make the C major chord, place your third finger on the third fret of the fifth string, your second finger on the second fret of the D string, and your first finger on the first fret of the B string. Strum the top five strings and make sure to come down on the very tips of your fingers to avoid buzzing.

Savage emphasizes the importance of using the second, third, and fourth fingers to make the G major chord, as you will be switching between the G and C chords frequently. The change is much easier to make if you use these fingers instead of the first, second, and third fingers. Overall, these eight chords are essential for every guitar player, and it is important to take your time and learn them properly to improve your guitar playing skills.
