Learn to Play “Stand by Me” on Guitar in the Key of G
In this guitar lesson, we’ll be learning how to play “Stand by Me” in the key of G. This song has been transposed to make it more beginner-friendly, but it can easily be put back into the original key of A by putting a capo up on the second fret. So, let’s get started!
The Chords
This song is very easy and only requires four chords: G, E minor, C, and D major. The G chord represents the one chord, E minor represents the six chord, C represents the four chord (four notes away from the one), and D major represents the five chord. This progression represents thousands of popular songs.
The Strumming Pattern
The strumming pattern for this song is strum-chuck-strum-chuck. By “chuck,” we mean a little slap of the strings. We’re going to do two slaps on the G chord, then the E minor gets one slap, one strum, and one more slap. Cut that in half on the C chord and the D chord, so only one set of strum-chuck-strum-chuck. Move it on the D chord, and then back to the G chord.
The Progression
Notice how the progression begins and ends with G. Looping back around, we’ll have to do another set of G chords, so it’s going to seem like you’re on G for a long time actually 16 beats. The progression is as follows: G – E minor – C – D – G.
Playing the Song
Once you have your chords down and your strumming pattern, you’re ready to play the song. Here are the lyrics to “Stand by Me” in the key of G:
When the night has come and the land is dark
And the moon is the only light we’ll see
No, I won’t be afraid, no, I won’t be afraid
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
So, darling, darling, stand by me, oh, stand by me
Oh, stand, stand by me, stand by me
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
And the mountains should crumble to the sea
I won’t cry, I won’t cry, no, I won’t shed a tear
Just as long as you stand, stand by me
Whenever you’re in trouble, won’t you stand by me?
Oh, stand by me, won’t you stand now?
Oh, stand, stand by me, stand by me
Conclusion
Learning “Stand by Me” in the key of G is a great way to start playing guitar. Once you have the chords down and the strumming pattern, you can play along with the lyrics and sing your heart out.
