When Metallica released “One” as the final single off their 1989 album And Justice For All, they finally had a certified hit on their hands after years of zero radio and MTV support.

“One” uses the same formula they used on earlier songs like “Fade To Black” and “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” in that it begins with a slow clean section and progressively builds in heaviness and aggression throughout the song.

In the four videos of this One Guitar Lesson series, we will take an in depth look at all the different epic guitar parts that make up this seminal Metallica classic.

The first video covers the intro and verse of the song. It starts out with an easy to play arpeggiated picking pattern in the rhythm guitar part. After one complete cycle through those chords the intro guitar solo arrives.

The solo that Kirk Hammett created here fits the haunting underlying guitar riffs perfectly. He craftily incorporates smooth bends, rapid one string legato, sweep picking, cross string picking and more into this fantastic opening solo statement.

After the solo the same chord progression is continued with a little bit busier picking pattern. That pattern continues into the verse with just a little slight variation.

In the second video lesson we will take a look at all the heavy and distorted rhythm guitar riffs. Those riffs include the chorus, heavy musical interlude section and the machine gun like rhythmic patterns that are employed throughout the entire extended ending section of “One”.

In the third video lesson we will go back and learn the second clean solo that Kirk Hammett plays just before the last chorus. Once again he uses a multitude of techniques including fast pull-offs and tapping. It is a short but sweet little solo that does a really nice job of complimenting the underlying chord work.

For the final video lesson we will take a look at the epic main solo that is perhaps the most beloved of all of Kirk Hammett’s solos. It contains some extremely fast tapping maneuvers, tremolo picking, fast legato licks, speedy blues inflected bends, doublestops and more. Yes, it is quite a workout!

At the end of the fourth video I will also demonstrate how to play the guitar harmony section that pretty much closes out the song.

All-in-all, this One Guitar Lesson provides a great learning experience if you want to master many metal lead and rhythm guitar techniques. It truly is a song that has it all.

Enjoy!!

In these Wanted Dead Or Alive guitar lesson videos you will learn the whole song in it’s entirety.

Along with the classic 12 string acoustic guitar intro that everyone instantly recognizes, I also demonstrate the intro of the song with all the sitar type effects and harmonics.

From there we will also cover how to play the verse and chorus of the song and try to help you understand all the little different ways they may play those parts throughout the song.

I wrap up these Wanted Dead Or Alive guitar lesson videos in the second video with a quick tutorial on how to play the solo. The solo is pretty straight forward and shouldn’t be much of a challenge, especially if you already have a good grip on how to play pinch harmonics.

By the way, if you don’t know how to play pinch harmonics yet, just check out my lesson on how to play pinch harmonics on the guitar .

I teach this entire Wanted Dead Or Alive lesson on a 6 string acoustic even though the original recording is on a 12 string acoustic. Don’t’ worry about that, the song still sounds great on just 6 strings and if you do have a 12 string acoustic just play it like I do in the video to make it sound like the original. The playing doesn’t change, only the sound.

Hope you guys enjoy these Wanted Dead Or Alive guitar lesson videos. Let me know if you wanna see some more Bon Jovi on this site.

This video guitar lesson is designed to teach you all of the beautiful guitar parts for “Dust In The Wind” by Kansas. This song is one of the most popular fingerstyle guitar guitar pieces ever written. As incredible as this song sounds it is actually only one fingerpicking pattern throughout, making it a great piece to learn.
The fingerpicking style that we are working with in “Dust In the Wind” is called Travis picking. Travis picking is the technique of using the thump to pick two repetitive bass notes to create a rhythmic and harmonic foundation for the song. It is used by not only Kansas, but by such players as Lindsay Buckingham and Chet Atkins as well.

Within these video lessons you will learn all of the intricacies of this gorgeous piece of music from the acoustic guitar parts to the viola/violin solo. That’s right, in this video guitar lesson series I have also arranged the classic viola and violin solo section for guitar to give you a complete study of this classic rock masterpiece.

There are actually two guitars playing during the original recording of “Dust In The Wind”. One guitar is in standard tuning and the other is using Nashville tuning. Nashville tuning is the process of tuning the EADG (6543) strings an octave higher than standard. This almost gives a 12 string guitar effect to the song. Within this video guitar lesson I will be using a standard tuned guitar throughout. Good luck!!

“Ramble On” is one of Led Zeppelin’s most popular tunes. It has some beautiful acoustic guitar work as well as some very classic guitar riffs.
There are two things going on during most of the song. One is an acoustic guitar part and the other is an electric guitar part layered on top.

We will cover both in these lessons so you will have your choice in which ones to play at that particular point in the song. The performance video sticks mainly with the main parts of the song as of course as I can’t perform both parts at the same time except for one section which you will see below.

Most of the layered acoustic and electric parts are very similar however, so playing just one of them at a time still makes for some very full sounding guitar parts to play along with the recording. So have with this classic Led Zeppelin tune and make sure to keep those request’s coming!!

In today’s “famous riff” lesson I will show you how to playing the main opening riff from “Addicted to Pain” by Alter Bridge.

“Addicted to Pain” was the lead single off the band’s fourth studio album Fortress. It contains driving 16th note rhythms through much of the song which makes this opening main riff a great alternate picking exercise.

In this Addicted to Pain guitar lesson I will show you how to play this driving 16th note riff note-for-note.

First off, let me reiterate what I said in the video. I am tuned to Dropped “D” in this video lesson but on the actual recording guitarist Mark Tremonti is tuned to Dropped “C#”. Dropped “C#” is a tuning identical to Dropped “D” if you refer to the distance the strings are tuned apart from one another. The only difference being that he has taken the Dropped “D” tuning and lowered the pitch of every string by one half-step.

So in the video lesson you will learn exactly how Mark Tremonti plays this killer riff, but if you want to play along with the original studio recording you will need to tune your whole guitar down an additional half step. I always try not to tune down in most of my lessons since down tuning like that would require many people to have to set their guitars up just for that tuning. So I just stick mostly with standard tuning or as close to it as possible when I can.

As for the riff itself we have some fast alternate picking in 16th notes across heavily muted strings. The combination of the high register that the fretted notes are played in with the addition of open strings can make having the notes of this riff come out clearly kind of tough.

The palm muting goes a long way in making all of those notes pop-out. It is a good idea to start slow, stick with strict alternate picking and really try to accent most of the notes that occur on the 5th string. That will help you achieve the right effect for this riff.

Of course this is just the main opening riff to “Addicted to Pain”. If you guys want me to teach the entire song please let me know that by making sure this video lesson gets 600 YouTube “likes”. After it reaches that goal I will then teach the entire song, solo included. 🙂

So I hope you guys enjoy learning this challenging riff and I look forward to coming back here and teaching the entire song note-for-note once all those “likes” are in!

This classic George Harrison penned tune by The Beatles was released in 1969 on the “Abbey Road” album.
The acoustic guitar parts in this song are in standard tuning with a capo at the 7th fret. This capo technique results in the song being performed as if it was in the key of D Major but actually sounding in A Major.

It can be a little tricky in the beginning to get all of the melody notes to come out in the chords so take your time and follow the picking hand instructions very closely.

This piece is beautiful even without the vocals which you can probably hear from the full performance video below. So have fun with this beautiful and uplifting tune!!

Thanks!! Carl..

In this Everlong guitar lesson I am going to teach you how to play all of this Foo Fighters smash hit in it’s entirety.

Comprising of just a few different parts I think Everlong would be a great study for just about any level of guitarist.

Be sure to tune your guitar to “Dropped D” before starting the lesson so you can play along. If you don’t know what “Dropped D” tuning is don’t worry it is a rather simple altered tuning. All you have to do is tune your 6th string down a whole step from E to D. Every other string on the guitar remains the same.

By tuning down to “Dropped D” it makes playing the add 9 chords used throughout the song much easier to play.

You will see that some parts of this Everlong guitar lesson will demonstrate a riff that is played multiple times throughout the song but in a different fashion. What I mean by that is that at times you will learn a riff that is played with a big high gain guitar tone but then at another time the same part will be played on a quite muted guitar tone.

Don’t be fooled by all of that. Just see it for what it is, the exact same guitar part simply played with a different amp sound or perhaps slightly muted.

Within the song we have an excellent chance to work on moving power chords around and playing octaves. The octave section especially is cool to practice due to all the open strings that you need to keep ringing and the quick change from an octave shape to a power chord shape.

If any section of the song gives you any trouble at all try to isolate where the problem is and just focus on that. It could be the change from just one chord to the next. If so, practice playing back and forth between only those two chords. That isolation of the problem area will help you get the move down much faster than always playing through the entire section every time you are practicing it.

In any case, Everlong is a fun song to play and I hope everyone enjoys rockin’ out to it!

In this famous guitar riffs lesson we are going to take a look at one of the most identifiable songs from Van Halen’s debut album “Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love”.

The opening guitar riff uses heavily muted arpeggiated picking drenched in the phaser/flange effect that would soon become a Van Halen signature sound.

Be sure to follow along with the picking indications in the video lesson. That will make the intricate guitar intro become a lot easier.

After that we take a quick look at the chorus riff. It was simple enough I though I would just throw it in. 😉

All in all this Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love guitar lesson is probably one of the most accessible of the entire Van Halen catalog.

The main riff may be kinda tricky at first but after a small amount of practice I am sure that just about any level of guitar player can get it up to speed.

Have fun! Carl…

I’ve got a great and easy song for you guys today. In this Photograph guitar lesson video, I will show you the simple 4 chords that make up this acoustic smash hit by Ed Sheeran.

In addition to that, I will demonstrate how to play the cool fingerstyle lick that opens the song.

Before we get started, you will need to make sure you are in the proper tuning. Ed Sheeran actually plays “Photograph” a couple different ways live. Sometimes he opts for a capo (this is probably how he recorded it as well), but other times he won’t use any capo at all and simply re-tunes one string on his guitar instead.

The tuning starting from the 6th string will be E A D E B E. So in other words, it is a standard tuning with the G string tuned down a minor 3rd to E.

This tuning will now enable all the chords to be super easy and also allow us to play the opening guitar lick easily as well.

Even though there are multiple parts to learn in Ed Sheeran’s “Photograph” (ie verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge), they all use the exact same 4 chords albeit in a different order each time.

So the real trick to getting everything memorized quickly is to simply remember the number of the fret each chord is played on and then memorizing the order of those numbers for each section. It will help you memorize it very quickly. If you have no trouble hearing which chord is next then that is even better!

The opening guitar lick is a simple fingerstyle lick played by alternating between fretted notes and open strings. It has a beautiful and open quality about it.

Since that opening is fingerstyle, you will want to strum the chords throughout the rest of the song without a pick as well. Ed Sheeran uses the back of his index finger’s nail to lightly brush the strings throughout the entire song. He is also dampening the strings by doing some pick-hand muting all the way until the 2nd chorus. I will demonstrate how to accomplish all of this easily in the video lesson.

Have fun with this acoustic smash hit from Ed Sheeran!
